You should understand the plan before you sit in the chair.
Scalp micropigmentation is a tattoo procedure that places small pigment impressions in the scalp. Depending on the plan, those marks can create the appearance of closely shaved follicles or soften visible scalp between existing hairs. They do not grow into strands. Cleveland Clinic's SMP overview explains the procedure.
That gives you the definition. The next question is what it would mean for your hair, preferred style and daily life. This guide provides a research path, with the full treatment, price and care information available where you need it.
If you want a fuller introduction to the technique, read what scalp micropigmentation is. If you already know the basics, start with the treatment approach closest to your own hair.
Find your starting point
Read the answer that fits your hair.
The same term can describe different goals. The treatment plan should reflect the look you want and the hair you have.
A closely shaved appearance.
Look at how the top blends into the sides and the haircut needed to maintain that balance. The men's page explains shaved appearance and density choices.
Explore men's SMP →A considered hairline.
Placement, temple detail and edge softness deserve a close look. Compare design choices with your face and the appearance you want over time.
Explore hairline tattoo design →Density within longer hair.
Consider the part, crown and edges in the style you actually wear. Ask how pigment would reduce scalp contrast alongside the remaining strands.
Explore women's SMP →A visible patch.
Compare temporary concealers, styling and hairpieces with a cosmetic tattoo approach. Each has its own requirements and daily routine.
Compare bald spot coverage →Have unexplained hair loss assessed.
A dermatologist can investigate why your hair is changing and discuss treatment. SMP addresses appearance. The AAD's diagnosis and treatment guidance explains the medical assessment.
Put the photographs to work
Review more than the best angle.
Ask for close, healed photographs of work similar to your starting point. Find out when each image was taken. Review the color, spacing and transition into the surrounding hair. Compare ordinary light with studio light where examples are available.
Look at the complete area. A frontal hairline view does not show the crown. A crown photo does not show the temples. Ask the artist to explain how the work connects across the scalp.

Compare the complete proposal
Know what the plan includes.
Two prices can describe different areas, appointment schedules or review arrangements. Ask for those details before comparing the total. Our current SMP pricing page provides the studio's published information.
Ask how the design is agreed, how appointments are spaced and when the appearance is reviewed. Bring up your haircut and work schedule early. Mention any planned travel. Practical details belong in the treatment conversation.
Read the SCALPS aftercare instructions and discuss the care supplied with your own plan. If an instruction is unclear, ask before the appointment.
The agreed appearance.
Describe the area, haircut and result you want to discuss. Ask the artist to explain the design and its limits.
The planned visits.
Confirm scheduling, review and how adjustments are handled. Get the complete quote and inclusions.
The scalp assessment.
Discuss existing pigment, allergies, scalp conditions and relevant medical treatment. Tattoo risks include infection and reactions; read FDA safety guidance.
The future upkeep.
Ask how changes in the pigment, haircut or remaining hair would be assessed and when a refresh might be considered.

Read the SCALPS story →Guaranteed Results: With a solid track record of success, our clinic stands behind the reliability of our SMP services.
Our work focuses on providing results that are indistinguishable from natural hair. Discuss what that appearance means for your own scalp and preferred style.
At consultation, review the actual work and proposed plan. Ask about the appointments, care and price so you can decide with a clear understanding of the service.
Make the consultation useful
Bring the information that matters.
Clear photos of the front, top and crown help start the conversation. Explain how you wear your hair, whether it has changed and what you currently use to cover the area.
Write down the question you most want answered. A useful appointment should connect the treatment proposal to that concern.
