What is a
hairline tattoo?
Tiny pigment impressions. The appearance of shaved hair.
A hair tattoo is another name for scalp micropigmentation, or SMP. A hairline tattoo uses this technique to recreate the look of hair follicles at the front of the scalp. The design can continue into the scalp to blend with a closely shaved look.
The pigment creates an appearance. It does not grow hair or stop hair loss. Your remaining hair, scalp and usual hair length help us decide whether this approach fits.

Which hairline
feels like you?
A hairline should work with your face, your age and the hair you have. Explore three design directions, then plan your own with SCALPS.
We draw the proposed hairline before treatment. You can discuss the height, temples and edge while looking at the design on your own scalp.

Keep the edge soft.
A gentle curve can give the front of the scalp a less angular outline. Spacing and a gradual transition matter as much as the overall shape.

Let the shape follow you.
A rounded direction can retain some recession at the temples. We consider how much to keep, how low to place the hairline and how it meets your existing hair.

Definition needs balance.
A straighter shape creates a more defined outline. The height and softness still need to suit your face, especially where the front meets the temples.
The height.
We look at your facial proportions and existing hair before drawing a proposed position.
The edge.
Fine impressions and a gradual transition help the hairline avoid a solid band of color.
The blend.
The plan considers the front, temples and scalp together so the hairline belongs to the overall look.

Does a hairline tattoo look like real hair?+
SMP creates the appearance of small hair follicles. For a shaved look, the visible match depends on the design, pigment impressions, surrounding hair and the length you keep it. It does not create individual growing hairs. Inspect real healed work and discuss your own starting point.
Is a hair tattoo the same as a regular tattoo?+
Both place pigment in the skin. Scalp micropigmentation uses small impressions to create a hair follicle appearance across the scalp. The artist needs experience in scalp work, hairline design and blending with existing hair. Read the hair tattoo guide.
Can you lower a receding hairline?+
The proposed position is drawn and discussed before treatment. We assess the face, temples, existing hair and intended hair length. A lower outline is not suitable for every starting point. The design must also make sense with the rest of the scalp.
Do I need to keep my hair shaved?+
A shaved SMP design aims to match the appearance of short stubble. Your routine needs to keep the remaining hair at a length that supports that match. If you want to keep longer hair and reduce visible scalp, ask about density work for men.
How long does a hairline tattoo last?+
Pigment can fade over time. Skin, sun exposure, care and the original work affect the appearance and future maintenance. We discuss care and when a touch-up assessment may be appropriate. It is not a promise of an unchanged result for life.
What are the risks and limits of SMP?+
Cosmetic tattooing carries risks, including infection, allergic reaction and an appearance you do not want. Tell the practitioner about scalp concerns before treatment. New or unexplained hair loss deserves medical assessment. The consultation helps you understand suitability, care and the expected cosmetic result. Read Cleveland Clinic’s treatment overview.
