SMP Aftercare Routine – DOs and DON’Ts explained
Your SMP story will begin a few weeks before your treatment.
However, before you even think of booking a session, do your homework: get all the information you can on your chosen SMP technician, their experience, and certifications. Only then will you be ready to start preparing for your scalp micropigmentation.
Before Your SMP Treatment
Your SMP treatment will require a bit of preparation. We’ll go over what you have to take care of before you go to your appointment.
The key elements of your before-care routine include:
- planning and research
- hydration
- avoiding sunlight.
If your scalp is hydrated, the pigments will be absorbed better. As a result, the initial appearance of your SPM will last much longer.
To get ready for your treatment:
- Plan your next vacation on time. Keep in mind that you’ll need to avoid direct sun exposure, tanning beds, and swimming as well for the first 30 days. Play your summer vacation accordingly.
- Talk to your trainer. Tell them you’ll need to switch to low-impact exercises soon. Plan a workout routine that won’t make you sweat at all.
- Avoid blood-thinning medication. Medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen are out of the question before a SPM treatment.
- Stay hydrated, and avoid alcohol and caffeine. Try to refrain from consuming coffee and drinking 48 hours before your treatment. Instead, drink lots of water.
- Avoid sun exposure. Even before your SMP session, try your best to avoid your scalp exposed to direct sunlight.
- Exfoliate. To have lasting results, you’ll need to remove the dead skin cells from your scalp.
Moisturize. For at least a week, moisturize your scalp for 3-4 times a day.
Wash your hair the night before. Wash your scalp thoroughly with a mild shampoo.
Scalp Aftercare – First 2 Weeks
The aftercare during the first 10-14 days following your treatment will determine the longevity of your SMP results.
If you follow the instructions your SMP specialist shares, you’ll reduce the risk of any side effects.
Here are some of the best post-treatment habits to include in your daily routine.
- Avoid direct sunlight. We strongly recommend avoiding sunlight for 30 days after the procedure. No tanning,
- Use clean pillowcases and clean hats. Stack up on fresh pillowcases and change them as often as you can. The same goes for hats or anything that’ll get in touch with your scalp. Opt for loose hats to avoid irritation.
- Don’t touch your scalp. Refrain from touching your scalp to avoid infection. You should also avoid scratching your skin. If you experience excessive itching, talk to your scalp micropigmentation technician.
- Avoid excessive sweating. Skip going to the gym altogether or change your workout routine to avoid heavy sweating. Saunas are forbidden during this period as well.
- Wash your head with baby shampoo. After 5-10 days you can start using hair products, but only the natural kind. Baby shampoo is the best option, as it’s very mild.
- Don’t shave your head. If you have to, you can buzz or cut your hair after 10 days (talk to your tattoo technician about your specific case). Avoid shaving it.
At first, all of this may sound like too much work. Remember that every step of the aftercare process will pay off soon.
Years After The Treatment
After a month has passed, you can return to your normal routine.
Still, we wanted to share some aftercare tips to include in your lifestyle. They are great for scalp health (and health overall) and can maximize the effects of your treatment.
- Drink plenty of water. Continuing to drink lots of water will keep your skin hydrated and the pigments intact.
- Eat a vitamin and mineral-rich diet. The food will nourish your scalp, keep it healthy, and keep the results of the scalp micro pigmentation longer.
- Wear hats or use sunscreen. In the years to come, continue wearing hats while sunbathing or keep your scalp safe from the UV rays with SPF.
- Change your skincare routine. Don’t use products that are too harsh for your scalp. Keep it moisturized, but opt for natural products.
- Wear a swim cap while swimming in the pool. Exposing your skin to chlorine can lead to the pigments fading away. So, put on a swim cap every time you go swimming in chlorinated pools.
- Choosing the right SMP technician is the true deal-breaker with scalp micropigmentation treatments. The experienced, certified SMP practitioner will guide you through the healing process in the days following treatment. On top of that, they’ll share their extensive knowledge on how to treat your scalp in the months and even years after your treatment.
While preparing for your first SMP session, do extensive research on your local SMP professionals and make sure you’re in the right hands.
